Give us adequate advance notice and we will ensure that the beer you require is there on time in the right package and quantity and in tip top drinking condition.
We supply beer in:
9 gallon casks (a firkin) with the loan of a tap or pump and minibar
4.5 gallon casks (a pin) with the loan of a tap
4.5 gallon Polypins (bag in a box) includes it’s own tap.
The approximate cost will work out at less than £1.30 per pint and we would ask for a refundable deposit against the return of the steel casks and the minibar.
The polypins are ready to drink and will keep for just a couple of days. The casks are proper live beer and need to settle but will keep and serve for up to a week.
Cask Real Ale or Bright Beer?
Typically the product that we hold and sell is well conditioned live real ale in casks and this is what we supply pubs with. When it was brewed we added finings and in the bottom of the cask are the finings and settled yeast. When it has been rolled around and loaded on a van it needs to be set up somewhere suitable and then left alone for a day to allow the yeast to settle again.
Tapping and venting real ale is part of the cellarman’s skill but basically it is fairly simple and we will explain what is needed, just a small amount of care really.
What we sometimes do is set up a cask in our cold store, vent it and tap it and then run it off into a Polypin ( A Bag in a Box ) the beer we are decanting is perfectly clear and ready to drink, ie. it is “Bright”. The Polypin has it’s own plastic tap already in place so you can take the beer home set it up and serve right away. When finished you may discard the Polypin and there is no equipment to return.
The downside of Bright Beer is that because we ran it off clear it will only keep for a couple of days.
Where do we keep it?
Somewhere nice and cool, pub cellars and cold stores run at about 13C. Much above 15C and it will be a warm unexciting brown drink and live beer does need up to 24 hours undisturbed before drinking or it will possibly be cloudy.
How to serve it?
With your cask or casks we can sell you or loan you perfectly good plastic or wooden cask taps and the wooden pegs you need for venting the cask. You need to set casks up on a simple stillage and we will show you what is needed when you collect or we deliver your beer. We can even loan you one of our nice varnished minibars and for a professional flourish a hand pull beer pump to give the sparkling head that people like.
Can we have Big Shed Beer in a marquee!?
OK it may be a bit warm and sweaty in there but there are simple ways of keeping beer cool. The cask needs draping with a damp towel, not wringing wet but thoroughly damp. It could be hessian sacking, 3 or 4 bar towels or an old fluffy beech towel, in any case drape the wet towel over the cask. As the dampness evaporates this tends to cool the beer the crucial few degrees. If it dries out then wet it again!.
WHAT ARE Firkins, Pins and Polypins.
A firkin is a 9 gallon cask and you see them stacked out the back at pubs when empty. A pin is a 4 ½ gallon cask, and both are made of stainless steel and very robust. When we fill them we use plastic shives and keystone bungs to close them. When you tap and vent one of these you will knock through the fragile centre of these bungs to fit a peg and a tap.
A Polypin is about 4 ½ gallons (20 litres) but is a plastic bag with a tap. Packed in a cardboard box it can be safely transported and used for serving. Really just a bigger version of the wine boxes you may have bought in a supermarket.
How many pints DO I GET IN A FIRKIN OR POLYPIN
A 9 gallon firkin holds 72 pints and you will waste a pint or two running it through a hand pull and at the end when it is finished and suddenly it goes cloudy with all the lees.
A polypin serves about 35 pints and we would always fill them generously
